Wired: Space Force. Tired: NASA

Keith’s note: Oddly Space Force officials tell recruits that their jobs will be on Earth but then their OR people put out a video that suggests that there are offworld jobs available to recruit people. Confusing? Misleading?

The U.S. Navy explores the Ocean alongside NOAA. Why shouldn’t the U.S. Space Force explore space alongside NASA? Maybe the first America to return to the Moon will be wearing a U.S. Space Force uniform. ?

No NASA is a civilian agency, There is no way that they’d send active duty Space Force. Oh wait. Anything is possible with this Administration.

The X-15 Program was a joint NASA-USAF program, as were many of NASA’s X-Planes. Both NASA and active duty USAF Astronaut Pilots flew into space using the X-15.

I also see nothing in NASA’s Charter preventing a similar relationship with the U.S. Space Force, nor does the OST prohibit it as Article IV allows “the use of military personnel for scientific research or for any other peaceful purpose” on Celestial Bodies.

So yes, it is breaking with poltical tradition. Undesirable politically – probably. But nothing about it would be illegal. Also remember the main reason NASA was created as a civilian agency during the Eisenhower Administration was to score points against the Soviet Union on the international stage in the Cold War. But the world was very different in that long ago era.

In the future who knows? But in the near term USSF officers will be able to compete for NASA ASCAN slots just like the other services.

Yes, and if selected they will be detailed to NASA while remaining on active duty status. So USSF officers may well be part of future NASA crews going into space, just as USA, USAF, USN and USMC officers have done in the past and are doing now. I wonder if anyone knows off hand how many current NASA astronauts are active duty military? I don’t feel like digging through the current bios.

Did you see the trailer? It might not be a good thing.

Yea I did. Its nice. So why is NASA not doing this? Space Force tells recruits that their jobs will be on Earth but uses a video that suggests otherwise to recruit people.

I don’t think we are talking about the same trailer.

But don’t all of the services brag, implying that they’ll make you a computer whiz/diesel mechanic or whatever? Now Hollywood says they’ll put a major star in orbit. Most recruits become grunts. Isn’t that the same thing?

    Does service guarantee citizenship?

Yes, if certain conditions are satisfied since as part of the U.S. Military it will be governed by the same naturalization (citizenship) laws.

      Naturalization Through Military Service

My brother-in-law gained citizenship for himself and his family via his service in the U.S. Army. He retired a few years ago as a Master Sargent.

He’s making a reference to the movie “Starship Troopers”, not a real life situation.
