Keith’s note: In June OMB issued new regulations which, if implemented, would gut the way that American science has been evaluated and conducted for the better part of a century. The science and technology community has pushed back. 497,000 times. More below.

  • U.S. researchers outraged at proposed changes to federal grants, Science: “Now, scientists and others are waiting to see how the administration responds to the outpouring of nearly 497,000 comments on the 412-page proposal that were submitted by the 13 July deadline. The administration has said it wants to finalize the new guidelines by 1 October.”
  • President Trump seeks control of science funding, NPR: “Published in the Federal Register on May 29, experts say the proposed changes would both codify the administration’s strategies to dismantle certain fields of study in the U.S. and lend it new authority to “advance the President’s policy priorities.”
  • Researchers worry a Trump rule could end U.S. scientific dominance, Washington Post: “The Post analyzed more than 50,000 public comments submitted to the federal government about the rule through Friday, and at least 88 percent opposed it, according to the analysis, which used artificial intelligence to classify each comment, with reporters checking a sample for accuracy. By comparison, roughly 6 percent expressed support, though the overwhelming majority of that came from a single form letter submitted more than 2,300 times.”
