Let’s Cut All That Woke NASA Science Stuff
Let’s Cut All That Woke NASA Science Stuff

Keith’s note: Some former Trump people like former OMB director Russell Vought are running around saying NASA is too “woke” so its OK to cut the NASA science budget by 50% to find the money to do the things that they wanted to do with Social Security or Medicare money – but can’t. He has been making the rounds with these ideas – and you can read all about all his anti-wokeish fever dreams here (se pages 85-86).

Indeed, many times the people or organizations tasked with getting the science out via education and outreach at NASA are not very good at doing so. But the science is so compelling that it […]

Importance of CRISPR Surpasses Pluto Ballot Stuffing Effort

Making the cut: CRISPR genome-editing technology shows its power, Science “[CRISPR] was conceived after a yogurt company in 2007 identified an unexpected defense mechanism that its bacteria use to fight off viruses. Under-representation at Astronomy Conferences

Studying Gender in Conference Talks: Data From 223rd American Astronomical Society Meeting “The most significant result from this study is that while the gender ratio of speakers very closely mirrors that of conference attendees, women are under-represented in the question-asker category. We interpret this to be an age-effect, as senior scientists may be more likely to ask questions, and are more commonly men. A strong dependence on the gender of […]

Just Say No To Science and Nature

How journals like Nature, Cell and Science are damaging science, opinion, The Guardian “We all know what distorting incentives have done to finance and banking. The incentives my colleagues face are not huge bonuses, but the professional rewards that accompany publication in prestigious journals – chiefly Nature, Cell and Science. … These journals aggressively curate their brands, in ways more conducive to selling subscriptions than to stimulating the most important […]
