Keith’s note: There will be another “Save NASA” protest at NASA Headquarters on Monday Sept. 15th. This is the third “Save NASA” protest in Washington, DC. Despite being totally relevant to workforce and science funding issues being discussed but he White House and Congress, the Planetary Society which has been pushing its own efforts, refuses to make any mention of this event or others involving actual NASA employees fighting for their jobs and their agency. For that matter, none of the space advocacy or trade organizations seem to want to mention this event – which should tell you a lot about their priorities – or lack thereof. Oddly they just added IFPTE to their lobbying team yet ignore their priority activities. Expected speakers include:

  • Rep. Suhas Subramanyam, VA-10 – House Cmte on Space, Science, and Technology
  • Monica Gorman, Area Vice President, Goddard Engineers, Scientists and Technicians Association (GESTA) – Union representing Goddard technical civil servants
  • Colette Delwalla, Executive Director, Stand Up For Science
  • Dr. Mollie Manier, National Institutes of Health, signer of the Bethesda Declaration
  • Matthew Biggs, President, International Federation of Professional & Technical Engineers (IFPTE) – National body for GESTA

More below

The organizers say: “we are a peaceful protest group, and we stand in solidarity with other scientific advocacy groups. This protest intends to raise public awareness and provide information about present and near-future cuts at NASA, and to urge Congress to pass a budget that funds our science and exploration programs before the fiscal year boundary. We also want NASA leadership to stop undermining NASA’s fundamental principles of science and exploration for the sake of human kind, to stop illegal terminations, and to fulfill their oath to support the Constitution and be faithful to the American people.”

Current NASA leadership, acting on the President’s and OMB’s proposed budget, has already greatly reduced the Agency’s capabilities, by removing thousands of civil servants and contractors with invaluable knowledge and expertise that would otherwise enable them to continue to serve the US. Simultaneously they are declaring the Agency will win the current Space Race. To win the first Space Race to the Moon, NASA was prioritized and appropriated $68 billion in 1965 alone (adjusted for inflation). In 2026, with goals to reach Mars, NASA’s proposed budget is only $18.8 billion.

Some of the cuts to NASA science involve turning off spacecraft that are already in space and actively sending back data. NASA contributes to agriculture, weather predictions, and safety. Without NASA Earth science, early detection for natural disasters and forecasting would be imprecise and difficult and could cost human lives.

Current protest details are listed below, and we have secured a protest permit.

Do that and half the workforce quits. We’re at NASA to do civilian science and exploration, not to be part of the Department of War.

Oh please… SpaceX is only relevant because of NASA. Also they don’t do any science work, which NASA leads the world in.

Do you doofuses even know NASA does science? The maker of this very website that you’re reading was a biologist. Is SpaceX hiring biologists? It’s ok to not like science, not everyone can do well in school, don’t feel bad, but you can’t just ignore its existence.

SpaceX and the other “satellite companies” are not there to make the one-off spacecraft that are basis of NASA’s scientific work. And if you believe those missions shouldn’t be one-offs, you really don’t understand how science spacecraft work.

NASA originally was established to facilitate advancement of technology for aeronautics and spaceflight-hence its name. Over the years NASA has tried to do a wide variety of geological, astronomical, biological and material sciences in an effort to demonstrate the value of space exploration. As more and more of its severely limited funds have been spent in those science areas, less and less focus has gone into aeronautics and space technology research. There were and are a lot of agencies established to do scientific research in the sciences. Some have far larger budgets than NASA’s. Yes, NASA ought to be saved, but what that means might not be what the protesters are wanting.

I am so, so tired of hearing this incorrect claim. Science was part of NASA from its original 1958 charter. Science doesn’t happen to, as you say ‘demonstrate the value of space exploration’. It is what NASA is chartered to do.

Don’t believe me? Doing an extremely easy internet search will bring you to the text of the charter: https://www.nasa.gov/history/national-aeronautics-and-space-act-of-1958-unamended/

PLEASE stop making this claim. You are wrong, and doing damage to something that is NOT happening at other agencies and NOT happening in the private sector. Once it is gone, it will be gone, and the American public will suffer for it.

Do some research before you post this nonsense. You are trolling. Start with reading the NASA Charter from 1958. It clearly spells out what NASA was initially intended to do. Indeed, it is captured in Law. if you continue to post false information you won’t be posting here.

The very first objective in the Space Act of 1958 that established NASA stated:

“The expansion of human knowledge of phenomena in the atmosphere and space;”

      Furthermore, it states:

“The establishment of long-range studies of the potential benefits to be gained from, the opportunities for, and the problems involved in the utilization of aeronautical and space activities for peaceful and scientific purposes.”

Scientific study is baked into the establishment of NASA.

Perhaps now would be a good time to try and understand the differences between the two agencies. Or the differences between civilian and military activities in this country. There are very good reasons they should be separate.
