Getting some vitamin G with Jared — NASA

Keith’s note: Jared Isaacman took several Trump family members for a plane ride the other day. Before you start to wag your fingers at him for this – understand that there will be many more opportunities for lots of NASA employees – and others – to get the same opportunity and that Isaacman is footing the bill for all of the expenses – in his own jets (yes he painted NASA logos on them). FYI he likes to fly lots of people in these jets and has been doing so for years. Silver Snoopys are nice. But pulling a bunch of Gs is … fun. Two tweets were posted that go into further detail. (see below).

Isaacman tweeted: “At NASA, we take to the skies for training, cutting-edge flight test programs, to send our astronauts to space, and to inspire the next generation to look up and imagine what is possible. Today, we had the opportunity to fly @LaraLeaTrump and @EricTrump over NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, and to show them where history is being made on the ground, including a visit to the Vehicle Assembly Building and the Artemis II rocket that will send NASA astronauts farther into space than ever before. We were honored to host you where America reaches for the stars.”

NASA PAO tweeted: “Administrator Isaacman has an extensive background in aviation and has generously made his privately owned F-5 aircraft available for NASA workforce incentive flights, flyovers, participation in America’s 250th birthday celebrations, and to inspire the next generation to take an interest in STEM fields and contribute to the greatest adventure in human history. All costs associated with these flights are covered by the Administrator, with zero burden to the taxpayer. On his first day, he publicly committed to responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars, including covering these costs personally, donating his salary to Space Camp, and ensuring NASA delivers on its world-changing mission efficiently and with urgency. So keep an eye out at rocket launches and Space Coast airshows. If you are an accomplished @NASA employee doing exceptional work, there will be opportunities ahead to take to the skies with the @NASAAdmin”.

I think that Administrator Isaacman has good intentions but there are more meaningful things that he could do to improve morale and support NASA employees. For example, Mr. Isaacman should use his influence to reverse the ban on NASA employee unions. The right to collective bargaining for NASA employees was taken away by an executive order and it should be restored. As a long-time NASA employee, I did not fully appreciate the importance of the employee union until I found myself in a position in which I needed their help. The union is now more important than ever. It might take some courage for Mr. Isaacman to speak up for the NASA employees on this and related issues, but it is the right thing to do and would demonstrate real leadership.

He has been on the job – with a full staff – for one week.

I don’t think this is only a matter of more time or more staff. What I hope is that Mr. Isaacman supports collective bargaining and other employee rights and will advocate for them. Those rights were taken away by the same administration that appointed him, so I think that could be a challenge. I am sure that Mr. Isaacman wants the best for NASA and we all want him and NASA to succeed. But I do not think that we can simply cheer on NASA without acknowledging what this administration has done to the agency and the damage that it continues to do to our whole country. The administration that appointed Mr. Isaacman is also the one that unleashed DOGE and drove away many of NASA’s most productive and creative people. That same administration is now disgracefully attacking former NASA astronaut Mark Kelly. None of this is acceptable and we should not overlook it.

Does he really have a full staff complement? He has a great Chief of Staff, and some good support AAs. But I think he could benefit from a lot more Jared-thinking people, and he can hire them using NASA Excepted Service.
