According to NASA PAO: “The following is a statement from NASA Administrator Bill Nelson on the passing of former NASA astronaut Rear Adm. (ret.) Thomas K. (TK) Mattingly II. “We lost one of our country’s heroes on Oct. 31. Sad loss. May he rest in peace.

It was very sad to read of Ken Mattingly’s passing. As one of only two Apollo astronauts (the other being John Young) to fly both to the Moon and on Shuttle, his commitment to crewed spaceflight was always very clear to see. Ad astra!

Another Apollo hero lost to time. I feel very fortunate to have lived during an era where we saw people like Ken Mattingly, and thousands of others engaged in the Program, make the impossible possible. Ad Astra!
