Another Clueless Tweet From Neil deGrasse Tyson

Neil deGrasse Tyson: I’ll grab Trump by the crotch when I meet him, The Hill
“Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson says he wants to use an unusual greeting when he meets President-elect Donald Trump. “When I meet President Trump, I may first grab his crotch – to get his attention – then discuss Science with him,” Tyson tweeted Friday afternoon.”
Neil deGrasse Tyson Tweets That He Will Grab Donald Trump’s Crotch Inverse
“As it were, though, the only thing Tyson is going to be grabbing is attention, since this provocative tweet is just another illustration that the scientist has become a victim of his own celebrity.”
Keith’s note: Planetary Society CEO Bill Nye and Board member Neil deGrasse Tyson were frequent visitors to the Obama White House. Alas, it would seem that the Planetary Society’s access to the White House is coming to an abrupt end – especially when a board member makes a crude comment such as this. Bill Nye was trying to get Trump to meet with him too just the other day. No more selfies with POTUS.

I guess Tyson is not as smart as some folks thought.…

His thing is over-simplified pop science, often flat out wrong.

That so many think he’s a 21st century Einstein is a good indication that a large part of our populace is clueless when it comes to math and science.

    “No more selfies with POTUS.”

So Trump will be the last U.S. president? I doubt that.

Maybe Trump would find that funny, though. I doubt it, but it’s a hope, and I’d hate for Tyson to have to step down from the Board over it.

Given the mood of Democrats he is more likely to be promoted to Chairman of Board 🙂

I’m not sure I catch your point?

Surely aside from a degree of sourness the mood of the party is unclear (Rep. Pelosi has a serious challenger, for instance).

    Stay classy, Dr. Tyson.

A meeting with the PS anytime in the coming few months? That would seem highly unlikely with/without The Good Dr.’s admittedly crude comments…

Dr Tyson has done himself no favors – the bar was previously set very low and instead or trying to raise it; he has merely continued the trend… 🙁

It’s a Tweet people. Geez. Besides, as much b.s. as Trump tweets, this is relatively tame by comparison.

Tyson can tweet a good game but when/if he ever gets to meet the new President will he follow through?

How will Elon Musk will fare under Trump? Trump loves coal and petro-energy so things don’t look good for Tesla/Solar City. I doubt Trump will embrace the notion of colonizing Mars.

On the other hand, Trump might favor a stronger collaboration with new space and private enterprise. Bridenstine seems more interested in space than most policy makers.

I voted for Hillary. I’m very anxious about our future but will have to wait and see how things play out.

We need a charismatic advocate for science and space exploration. But Tyson has been falling flat on his face. He has increasingly been a disappointment.

But remember Elon Musk’s drive is to make both economical. One part of his plan for Solar City is to make rooftop solar a cheaper alternative to normal roofing, while the entire point of Telsa is to be independent of gas stations by charging at home and work. Both may be at the tipping point of not needing any further government support.

I agree to a point. There’s a big elephant in the room, though, and it’s the existing electrical infrastructure.

Covering my roof with solar panels makes a lot of sense. But there’s a wire coming to my house from a pole out in the ROW, a wire that delivers power 24/7/365. It cannot fairly be abandoned.

Infrastructure costs are apportioned to rate payers. Electric companies’ investments are non-trivial. They rest on a predictable income stream.

This will be an interesting discussion. The message to power companies should be something like “so sorry your market disappeared. Tough luck”. But that’s not what will happen.

In the end Mr. Musk’s market for roof top energy isn’t as simple as first appears and this will affect Solar City.

I thought it was clever. He was directly satirizing Trump who had said about women that: “when you’re a star they let you do it. You can do anything … Grab them by the [crotch]. You can do anything.”

But instead of sexually assaulting his victim as reality show “star” Trump intends, science show “star” Tyson would rather, while he had his undivided attention, take the opportunity to educate Trump.

There is also potentially a secondary reference to the saying commonly used during the Vietnam war, “When you’ve go them by the b..ls, their hearts and minds will follow.”

So, bottom line, I think it was a carefully crafted bit of crudity.
