Everyone Seems To Like The Martian – So Far

Toronto Film Review:’The Martian’, Variety
“But instead of trying to scare people off space travel, Scott and company recombine these elements in hopes of inspiring a generation for whom the moon landing and shuttle missions are now ancient history, practically nostalgia, while the American space program sits mothballed. While not propaganda per se, the film seeks to galvanize (rather than terrorize) those who might shape the future.”
The Martian Review, ComingSoon.net
“Ridley Scott’s return to space may defy credibility at times, but it’s a joyous and triumphant tribute to science and the space program that’s consistently entertaining, which should allow it to be a substantial crowdpleaser.”
Ridley Scott’s The Martian Is Sublime, Sophisticated Entertainment
“If you are worried about heading to space again with Ridley Scott after the grim, muddled Prometheus, fear not. His new space yarn, The Martian, based on the science-heavy novel by Andy Weir, is a pure delight, a tense survival tale leavened by an abundance of geeky wit and an array of fine actors at their snappy best. It’s the first Ridley Scott picture in a long time that feels energized by its scope and ambition rather than buried under it.”
Keith’s note: Positive reviews. Lots of cross-over promotion videos and advertisements too. And NASA is engaged. Should be a great movie. But … there are still no comments from Explore Mars (or any other space advocacy organizations) as to how the movie is going to increase NASA’s budget. Of course, the space advocacy groups will all argue as to how such imaginary money should be spent since none of them agree with NASA or each other as to how humans should travel to Mars and what they should do there. Maybe the movie will inspire a new generation of space advocates that will actually do the things needed to go to Mars instead of just talking about doing them decade after decade after decade.
Space Advocates Think A Movie Will Send Humans to Mars. If Only., earlier post
American’s human spaceflight program isn’t mothballed as much as held hostage by Marshall.
I liked the book enough that, as usual, I’m afraid to see the movie. But I will. Whatever it’s like, I’ll be more interested in seeing what the random “civilian” thinks of it.
Regarding the budget:

I’m hoping the film is really good, can’t wait.
I guess every year in either Oct or Nov we’re going to get a big budget sci-fi flick: Gravity(2013), Interstellar(2014), and now The Martian(2015). Hopefully this year we’ll get a good one.
Of course, the NASAWATCH community, or any other collection of people interested in space topics, will discuss how such imaginary money should be spent since none of them agree with NASA or each other as to how humans should travel to Mars and what they should do there.
Why does this surprise anyone?
Anyway, it’s a movie and as far as budgets go, America has a representative gov’t. NASA budget is not a line item on election day. And in recent history, when politicians get too vocal about space specifics, they are ridiculed (Newt Gingrich criticized by the media and the person that won the nomination) (Donald Trump’s recent response to a space advocate – Great stuff but I’d rather fix our infrastructure first). So you are right about categorizing your post as “culture” because that is what would need to change. I don’t think a movie will be the thing that changes it.
The people working and making progress in the industry will eventually succeed at the thing we want them too, whatever that is. Funding a trip to Mars? Actually landing there? Colonization with a first born on Mars? Take your pick. And there will be a space movie that comes out around that time riding a mutual wave of excitement. And then finally the media will say, thanks to the groundswell around this movie, real things are finally happening on Mars! Don’t let it surprise you either.
Enough of these boring SpaceX movies!

ACTION!!!!!!
While looking over NASAs grave on the moon, one of the characters says congratulations humans haven’t been on the
moon for hundreds of years.
This cool video has 13 million hits!
Great music!
Cool!
I’ll play it again!
So much for young people believing NASA is going to Mars in 20 years lolol
Note the moon mars video has many more hits than the others?
I didn’t like the book. Too wordy, too many technical details, lack of dialogues, lack of interesting conflicts, characters are not interesting and all of them speak in the same way. If you’re looking for a good book, try “The Martian Conspiracy” written by Andy Weir. It was published about 2 months ago on Amazon. At least it got Mars storms right.
I am reading The Martian book. Really liked it. It is mostly tech. All kinds. Like growing potatoes. Working with hydrazine was interesting. NASA would land near an ice deposit though for water. There has been images of recent meteor strikes showing ice. Should be able to use the drill or rover to get to it. I don’t see any mistakes. It all seems plausible. Maybe too many high winds dust storms. A little dated since he is cleaning solar panels, which was a big deal, but lately have found that dust devils do a good job of cleaning. Missed some drama by not having them come through. A lot of profanity. I hope NASA does not really use that much. .Y. 2 boobs was his reply when told not to use it.
A couple of mistakes. NASA will probably use the new green fuel, not hydrazine. Which blows the whole story. The old error of magnetic boots. No steel to attract to. Must not have watched ISS. They use toe holds. I have only known 1 person to use profanity every other word like the PA person. Nobody talks like that. Maybe writers do since it only happens in novels and movies.
