Congress Is Honoring Hidden Figures

Ranking Member Johnson and Vice Chairman Lucas Introduce the Hidden Figures
“Today, Ranking Member Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) introduced H.R. 6795, the “Hidden Figures Congressional Gold Medal Act.” Vice Chairman Frank Lucas (R-OK) is an original cosponsor of the legislation. This bill awards the Congressional Medal of Honor, Congress’s highest civilian honor, to Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson, Dorothy Vaughan, Christine Darden, and all the women computers, mathematicians, and engineers at NASA, and its precursor organization NACA, who devoted their talents in service to the United States through World War II, the Space Race, and the Cold War. During this period, women submitted their work anonymously, were paid less than their male peers, and had few opportunities for career advancement. In addition, women of color were initially subjected to the indignity of segregated dining and bathroom facilities. Senator Chris Coons (D-DE) introduced a Senate version of the legislation, S. 3321.”
CMH ? really ?? I think they mean (as they state in the name of the Act) the Congressional Gold Medal.
sloppy reporting !
to each and every individual … that’ll be a bunch, and also downplays the role of the individual. Surely some are more deserving than others ? They give generals medals to recognise the action of their armies.
Without taking one iota from their accomplishment, and the drive they needed to succeed as they did, and to accomplish what they did … spare a thought for the guy (whoever he was) who recruited them.
The release was posted verbatim. There is no “reporting”. Only quoting.
Sorry, no slight intended at your reporting … but rather sloppy work by source.
The military award is the Medal of Honor (MOH), awarded by the President in the name of Congress, for action in or related to combat, involving risk of life and limb, above and beyond the call of duty! The Congressional Gold Medal (CGM) is awarded by act of Congress to outstanding persons for meritorious service to our country and humanity.
The link on NASA Watch currently seems to be broken, but a search for the title of the story takes me to a press release on democrats-science.house.gov. It begins:
“(Washington, DC) – Today, Ranking Member Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) introduced H.R. 6795, the “Hidden Figures Congressional Gold Medal Act.” Vice Chairman Frank Lucas (R-OK) is an original cosponsor of the legislation. This bill awards the Congressional Gold Medal, Congress’s highest civilian honor, to…”
Certainly about time! Katherine Johnson is 100 years young. Nicer to award now rather than posthumously!
What I like about the book and movie is it illustrated those in not-so-glamour tedious detailed work that requires attention to detail along with lot of OT and all-nighters.
