11 September 2001: Bad news from Earth, SpaceRef

“The news from Earth that morning wasn’t good. Frank Culbertson would soon find that some of the day’s pre-planned routine would be altered. As soon as he was told of the attacks, Culbertson checked to see when they would be passing over the east coast of the U.S. Discovering that this was only some minutes away, Culbertson grabbed a camera. The window in Mikhail Tyurin’s cabin turned out to be the one with the best view.”

NASA Update: Remembering September 11, 2001

“Date/Time: Friday, Sept. 10, 11 a.m. Join Administrator Sean O’Keefe and Astronaut Frank Culbertson for a NASA Update as the NASA family remembers the victims and heroes of September 11. Frank Culbertson was the only American not on Earth on Sept. 11, 2001. At the time Culbertson was an Expedition 3 crewmember onboard the International Space Station and was witness to the damage done to the World Trade Center towers in New York City, 230 miles below. The broadcast can be seen on NASA Television (NASA HQ Channel 3) and will be webcast on http://www.nasa.gov/ntv.”
