Keith, with all due respect, these are not “layoffs”. These employees are being fired “for cause” according to the papers they’re being given, which is evil in and of itself.

    How about other centers?

My understanding was that NASA was given discretion on handling probationary employees and that there was not going to be mass firings, as of Thursday afternoon.

    Thanks for this site!

That discretion was reversed by OPM last week. Probationary employees across government can now be fired for simply being probationary – which is what is happening everywhere.

Keith, can you please give a link or a direction to a credible NASA source such as a statement they have put out or any other related official NASA statement regarding this. I am sure you would not publish false information and I appreciate you being possibly the first to inform the public. However, I actually am a probationary employee at AMES and need to know if these are rumors or official due to this being a life changing moment for myself and others.

My report is accurate. If I reveal the sources they will most certainly be disciplined and, given new loyalty criteria, probably fired. I never post false information knowingly and if I make a mistake I always correct it and admit it. The Ames workforce – and the rest of NASA will find out what is going on officially after the long weekend. I’d suggest that you look at random news stories about other agencies and how huge numbers of probationary employees are being fired – and apparently all of them have only one ‘sin”: being probationary and thus easiest for the Administration to fire. This whole thing sucks big time. I lost my dream job at NASA during a purge like this. Best wishes and do not let this sour your dreams.

I was a probationary employee at the DOI. They fired us on Friday. Be prepared it is coming. They fired great well renowned scientists that had joined too.

Keith is right. It is across the board. The only thing that can save you is veteran status.
