NASAWatch on TV: Polaris Dawn
NASAWatch on TV: Polaris Dawn

Keith’s note: I was on BBC World News [Audio], Deutsche Welle [Audio], and CGTN [Audio] talking about the Polaris Dawn EVA. During my BBC and DW interviews I compared and contrasted spacewalks in the 1960s and today as well as NASA spacesuits and new commercial space suits. I used one of those spongy astronaut things NASA gives away at meetings but I added a USB-C cable to demonstrate the tether used by the Polaris crew. If you are of a certain age and watched Gemini astronauts doing EVAs live on TV, then you may recognize the orange-visored helmet that my little astronaut is wearing. Update: After the return of Polaris Dawn I spoke with Deutsche Welle Sunday morning [Audio] and then again in the evening [Audio]. I also spoke with Alhurra [Audio] (videos below)

NASAWatch on Scripps News: Boeing Starliner Update
NASAWatch on Scripps News: Boeing Starliner Update

Keith’s note: I just recorded a piece for Scripps News that should be airing on its various networks/stations about the current Boeing Starliner status and the planned EVA. ICYMI according to a Friday update from NASA: “NASA and Boeing leadership are adjusting the return to Earth of the Starliner Crew Flight Test spacecraft … Mission managers are evaluating future return opportunities following the station’s two planned spacewalks on Monday, June 24, and Tuesday, July 2.” And today’s EVA was cancelled “due to a water leak in the service and cooling umbilical unit on Dyson’s spacesuit.” So … things are going to be TBD-ish for a while.

Debunking Those Short Women EVA Myths

OMG someone just asked Bowersox why put this on women, why not the suit. Bowersox dug in, talking about how women are typically smaller than men."There have been a lot of spacewalks where tall men able to do the jobs and were able to reach in and do jobs better." — Alex Stuckey ? (@alexdstuckey) October 18, 2019 Women are just as capable as men to do these. @NASA doesn't […]

Where Are The #Moon2024 Lunar EVA Suits?

If true, more evidence #moon2024 is a political stunt designed to help Trump win re-election instead of a serious plan to help America. https://t.co/EeHvDQOB95 — brianweeden (@brianweeden) May 1, 2019 We will have EVA suits, get out, and do meaningful work. — Jim Bridenstine (@JimBridenstine) May 1, 2019 NASA OIG: NASA’s Management and Development of Spacesuits “NASA continues to manage an array of design and health risks associated with the […]

Update Today on Water-Filled Spacesuit Helmet

NASA Spacewalk Mishap Investigation Board Report “While I am concerned about ensuring this particular incident does not happen again, I am especially concerned about cultural factors that may have contributed to the event. In our exuberance to get the job done, we may have allowed ourselves to accept the commonly accepted causes for small anomalies. We have a responsibility not to move on from any abnormal situation until we understand […]
