Keith’s note: Cutting NASA Education and then doing a book reading – While the Administration seeks to end all funding for NASA’s education efforts – as if that somehow makes it all better. Who comes up with these ideas? NASA’s tweet: @NASA Tomorrow, Aug. 4, @SLOTUS Usha Vance will join astronaut Suni Williams at @NASAJohnson to read a space-related book to children. Goddard announced it’s closing its Visitor Center as well. That’ll really inspire kids.
Keith. I’m pretty sure that Second Lady Usha Vance reading a book at JSC to children is a completely independent variable from OMB’s proposal to cut NASA education programs. The core education grants to universities in every state are going to continue, thanks to the Appropriators. But many nonprofits will no longer be able to tap into federal funds, and instead will have to compete for private contributions. Why don’t you feature the best ones here so people can choose to contribute?
Meanwhile, having the Vice President’s spouse do something at NASA as part of a national reading campaign is a good thing for space and for the country. It’s a model for good behavior by all American adults (not just parents): reading to kids about exciting real futures instead of handing them a screen with Tic Toc. Or outsourcing education of youth to bureaucrats.
