It seems to me that this nomination is a potential game-changer for NASA’s present and future. With his entrepreneurial background, Issacman could bring massive restructuring to NASA’s bloated and outdated structure by embracing a long overdue BRAC-like effort addressing the agency’s crumbling infrastructure and organization design born of self-interest and self-preservation through efforts like TCAT and MAP. He should lead a clear-eyed effort to break through internal and external barriers which have prevented to the agency from consolidating facilities (yes, some Centers should be reduced or deleted entirely).
He must also address inefficiencies in Mission Support by re-inventing the way NASA conducts business including financial management (NASA received another Material Weakness in 2024) and procurement. Both lines of business rely on outdated systems, processes, bloated organizational structures, philosophies, and stale thinking at both leadership and operational levels. He should implement one of NASA’s most effective best practices of the past by transferring unwilling or unable leaders to remote outposts (no offense WFF) to help motivate them to clear the path for fresh thinkers and new approaches.
While one individual can only bring so much change to the agency, it is my fervent hope that the remaining Trump appointees are focused on introducing and supporting the long overdue house cleaning of functions, facilities, and folks at NASA.
