Michael Altenhofen Is Leaving NASA HQ

Keith’s note: this internal email was sent to NASA Employees by the new NASA Chief of staff Brian Hughes (LinkedIn). I find it to be a little odd that Hughes makes no mention whatsoever of Altenhofen’s long career at SpaceX before he came to NASA. Hughes wrote: “Since just after President Trump’s inauguration, Michael Altenhofen LinkedIn) has served as a White House appointee at NASA ensuring that the foundation of change for this agency is strong. He worked with the Acting leadership team to evaluate how our agency can be reimagined for the President’s vision. His experience in space policy inside and outside NASA is immense and with his transitional work here complete he returns to his family and new opportunities. As a college student, Michael interned at NASA Goddard Spaceflight center and leaves having been an invaluable asset in the Administrators Suite. He will continue to serve as Deputy Chief of Staff and Senior Advisor to the Administrator until June 27th. On behalf of Acting Administrator Janet Petro, the agency leadership, and the entire workforce, I extend a heartfelt thank you to Michael and ask everyone to join me in wishing him great success in his future endeavors.”

I remember when the threat of Musk’s acolytes funneling even more money to SpaceX was the worst of NASA’s potential problems. The silence in these comments lately is deafening.

Fascinating how the email talks about his one summer internship at NASA, but failed to mention that Altenhofen’s entire career was spent in manned spaceflight at SpaceX. I guess conflicts of interest aren’t illegal anymore as long as you don’t talk about them.
Anyone who has spent the last 5-10 years in human space flight at Space X probably has more experience than anyone at NASA.
As someone who worked 25+ Shuttle missions and multiple ISS increments, I call BS on your remark.
Sure, whatever you say…
