Keith’s note: Hey gang – it looks like you too can vote on the design of the new logo for The Space Force. Which one do YOU like? (larger image)
According to this official Trump 2020 campaign email from Brad Pascale: “Friend, President Trump wants a SPACE FORCE — a groundbreaking endeavor for the future of America and the final frontier. As a way to celebrate President Trump’s huge announcement, our campaign will be selling a new line of gear. But first we have to make a final decision on the design we will use to commemorate President Trump’s new Space Force–and he wants YOU to have a say. Vote for your favorite logo.”

“Mars Awaits” and the the top left is some Mirror Universe NASA logo stuff. So they’re playing like they want to absorb NASA into this new military branch?

The logo is to commemorate PTrump announcement and for a line of gear they’re going to be selling.

I think the plan is to roll NASA space parts into this new space force. I’m sure the DOD/IC is even advocating for that.

Ah, but who will be selling the “Space Force” gear? Ivanka? That’s what this is really all about, changing space policy and reorganizing the DOD as a means to a far more important end, marketing a highly profitable line of clothing and souveniers..

Ivanka shutdown her clothing line a month ago. So not her.

It’s a campaign email that went out to vote for the logo. Whatever is selected will be put on a line of gear. They’re thinking if people get involved in picking the logo they’ll sell more gear to use in the campaign. It’s also helping the election and advocacy of the new space force.

Yes, it is just a viral ad campaign to raise money for President Trump’s re-election. A normal letter would be ignored but because this one includes Space Force folks are spreading on their news sites. A very clever strategy to promote the re-election website.

Since the actual sales of products has been mentioned, this goes beyond that (or doesn’t even involve that.) Apparently, clicking to vote for a logo takes you to a page soliciting campaign donations. That’s exactly the page you would want to get people to look at, if you were trying to raise money.

This is sorta my point. None of the “Space Force” announcements have included any talk of rolling NASA in part or in whole into this new service branch. But the unqualified NASA Administrator is cheerleading the Space Force as much as his own agency, and now the President’s reelection campaign is putting up imagery that suggests/hints at absorbing the “Space Force” replacing or taking over for NASA. So did the President direct his new NASA Administrator and the DoD leadership to plant to have the “Space Force” take over or replace NASA, and if so why hasn’t anyone said so in public?

You know some of greatest days for NACA were just after the U.S. Air Force became a separate service and, because they were trying to out do the U.S. Navy with aircraft that flew higher, faster, further, they partnered with NACA in funding a whole series of X-Planes during the late 1940’s and 1950’s. The new U.S. Air Force was also in competition with the U.S. Army on ballastic missiles and also partnered with NACA, and then NASA on developing missiles like the Thor, Atlas, Titan. Those were good days for NACA/NASA and places like Edwards AFB, VAFB, Patrick Air Force Station hummed with activity.

Would it be so bad if the U.S. Space Force’s proposed Space Development Agency teamed with NASA to develop better reusable launch systems so lost space assets could be quickly replaced, or existing ones had lots of Delta V to get out of harm’s way? Or develop smaller more effective and easier to launch sensor platforms? Seems that could be as much a boom to space commerce as the USAF/NACA partnership was to aviation.

Maybe Administrator Bidenstine has a better understanding of space policy and areospace history than you give him credit for.

Anything moving the ball foreard- by which I mean both HSF and planetary science- is a good thing.

I’m not entirely convinced it would move the ball forward. The Department of Defense, for good reasons and bad, past experience, a much higher priority on the safety of military personnel than on the cost of hardware. Spending more (or expending things) is better than something not working when someone’s life depends on it.

But that promotes a success-at-all-costs philosophy. And that is not at all what’s best for robotic, scientific spacecraft (in my opinion.) A new Space Force might spur funding for space related research and development. But it could easily be focused on high reliability regardless of cost.

There were specific plans discussed in the space corps which included parts of NASA moving over. That resulted in all sorts of behind the scenes politics to the point that it basically was dropped for a while.

This round seems to be first get the new space force approved then come out with the plan. Contrary to the space corps, the new space force has little details announced. Interesting that NRO advocates arent lobbying like they were. With the latest JWST congressional hearings, I would be surprised if NASA wasn’t part of the new space force- especially the research laboratory’s between NASA and DOD being integrated.

The plans have been announced. Not widely reported, but they came out at the same time as the Vice President’s speech. They are for reorganization entirely within the Department of Defense, no NASA or NRO involvement, and then getting congressional authorization to merge the reorganized elements into a sixth military service.

Different things may have been discussed in the past, and you may think they’ll do more once they get approval from Congress. But that’s not in the plan they rolled out on Thursday.

        To borrow from SpaceBalls:

“Marketing, where the REAL money from the Presidency will be made!”

BTW, there’s been a story that George Lucas approved of SpaceBalls with the proviso: “No marketing!”

I had a dream in 2015 of the United States Space Force. The logo I saw was the second one down but it also had the words United States Space Force. I just wanted to go on record.

P.S. What I also saw were technology not yet publicly made known
such as hyperspace travel, and particle decronstruction and reconstruction technology. I said planetary academy on Mars that had a sky like ours. It was colorful and had blue skies. The entry to the academy had a huge arch over it. Young men and woman were dressed in blue jump suits with the logo patch on the left shoulder, but the did students did not need breathing apparatus.

Space ships the defyed gravity would travel locally picking up space cadets from Universities to subspace. I seen more bizarre stuff but will not speak of it here.

For reference here is the one for the Russian Space Force.

The embalm the Chinese are using for their People’s Liberation Army Strategic Support Force

And the existing USAF Space Command embalm.

Really, its funny watching the reactions of folks to what is a logical response to the military actions of Russia and China in space.

The Russian org has existed for decades. Well, sorta, as it’s been broken up twice. But still, what’s the urgency to respond to them now? Russia’s space program in general is not in great shape, and their military space efforts are mostly limited to ballistic missiles and satellites.

Ah the Catch 22. If President Trump ignores Russian getting aggressive on space it’s because he “works” for President Putin. If he does then he is a promoting “war in space”. Either, way those who oppose him will complain about it.?

I was thinking of the Chinese company that will be making the logo patches.. probably the same one that makes trumps America first, make america great, hire americans .. caps that trump hawks at rallies ..

Maybe it’s just me, but don’t all of those use the same, Star Trek badge-like, stylized spacecraft? The upward pointed arrow in the center of the design. I’m also unsurprised that the dominant color in most of the Trump 2020 campaign concepts is red. (Although I personally associate reds with revolutions in 1848 or 1917, not conservatives…)

It’s to commemorate the inauguration of the Space Force, so it wouldn’t be a military emblem. And yes, it is just silliness.

it is not really about the Topic.. but why does Trump only care about the priest but not about the US NASA scientist (Serkan Golge) who is still imprisoned in Turkey?

Maybe because NASA hasn’t told him about it or made it an issue? Maybe folks should start publicizing it as was done with the minister.

“Mars Awaits” – Really? Are we invading, conquering, subjugating or policing that planet with this group? Do we really need to perpetuate our endemic and growing culture of violence into our space exploration endeavors? Something is going very wrong with this society, culture and species.

Yeah, that one makes no sense whatsoever. What does the Dept of Defense need with Mars when we don’t have anything to defend there… unless it can be used to aid defense of the country on Earth somehow. But wow that is stretching things waaay out.

Once upon a loooong time ago – in ye ancient ’60s, I as an insane space-cadet kid had a substantial Mad Magazine collection. The mag sometimes had sticker sheets or mini-posters with oddball slogans or messages. A memorable one was just a bright red sheet with a simple message … in giant text, bold & all caps:
        “BOMB MARS NOW !!!”

Everything about this is gross and unethical.

Let’s be clear how we got here. Donald Trump, a man who thinks the F-35 turns literally invisible, was briefed on discussions that Congress and the Pentagon were having about putting various military-space stuff under one roof, like Cyber Command. It is an idea that’s been around for a few years. It’s not even a fully formed idea. Nobody was actually ready or wanting to pull the trigger. He was briefed on the existence of an ongoing discussion about something that may happen, at some point.

Somehow, someway – likely through his gross misunderstanding of what was being discussed – the Space Force became Battlestar Galactica come to life. And because this administration operates first and foremost on cheap and trashy marketing, and no substantive policy – we got here. A Space Force nobody really wants (yet), and a political logo competition, before it’s even law. Or close to law.

And to make matters more cynical, one of the logos is just the NASA logo in red, because MAGA or something.

This is so gross. It takes national security completely non-seriously. it takes government reform completely non-seriously. It’s walking the line of corruption given (A) a political party is marketing merchandise for a branch of the military that (B) isn’t formally created yet. Imagine if they had MAGAfied merch for the US Army. It’s very unseemly.

The Space Force might be a good idea. One day. Right now, this is just politicizing national security, and making a cheap dishonest buck off of it.

Like it or not, it is a brilliant marketing strategy and probably jumpstart 2020 campaign way ahead of any other president hopeful. Many people confuse NASA missions and Hollywood movies. NASA, USAF Space Command pretty much look the same. Creation of a Space Force creates images of huge Battlestars ready for anything (make sure that large craft’s systems all have independent networks). Most don’t know considerable amount of Space Command activities is sitting in front of computer screens (and can be very boring too).

But hey what does the average person know, for us on this list it is the same 20 or 30 people.
