Russia's New Starship Looks Very Familiar

Keith’s note: Didn’t they do this sort of thing back in the 80s when they copied the U.S. Space Shuttle?

Don’t forget the Soviet version of the Concorde, the TU-144. The problem was neither it or the Buran really worked right, which is what happens when you just copy the plans with having an example to take apart like they did with the B-29.

Actually, the biggest problem with Buran for the Soviets is that the CIA discovered they were stealing the shuttle plans and actually fed them misinformation, such as using a glue to adhere the tiles that would fail on re-entry. Hopefully for Russia, James Cameron won’t give them ‘bogus’ plans.

I’d want to see a reference before I believe that story. But in some ways, I think the best disinformation the CIA could slip the Russian space program would be, “Yes, we’re absolutely certain the way NASA is doing it is a good idea.” Say, handing them a copy of the blueprints for an RS-25, and convincing them they really need to build something just like it. That could set them back by years.

Or even better all of the blue prints for the Orion, which will set them back decades, especially as they will need something the size of the old Energia to launch it. And it will keep their only aircraft carrier busy on doing recoveries of it if they ever get it flying.

Could be worse… they could’ve tried to do Battlestar “Galacticaski”
